Master Cheongun from a small hermitage at Sindoan on Gyeryongsan, Chungcheong“Haha, do not be so scared of samjae. I am eighty-two years old and have lived through it five or six times, yet here I am, completely fine.”What Is Samjae?
Samjae refers to a three-year period that visits every twelve years, based on your Korean zodiac animal. Just like the changing of the seasons, it is simply a natural rhythm you encounter along life's path.
Our ancestors did not view this time as an unavoidable disaster, but rather as a season to walk carefully. Think of it as a time to avoid reckless expansion, reflect calmly on yourself, and take a well-deserved rest.
The Flow of Entering, Staying, and Leaving Samjae
The three years of samjae are divided into the entering year, the staying year, and the leaving year. The energy enters in the first year, settles in during the second year, and fades out in the third year.
It is much like a powerful wave that rolls in, pauses for a moment, and gradually recedes. Rather than panicking at each stage, you simply need the wisdom to observe your surroundings and keep things tidy.
Finding the Samjae Years for Your Zodiac Animal
The Monkey, Rat, and Dragon experience samjae during the years of the Tiger, Rabbit, and Dragon. The Snake, Rooster, and Ox go through their samjae period during the years of the Pig, Rat, and Ox.
The Tiger, Horse, and Dog face samjae during the years of the Monkey, Rooster, and Dog. The Pig, Rabbit, and Goat meet their samjae during the years of the Snake, Horse, and Goat.
Looking at recent years, the period from 2025 to 2027 marks the samjae cycle for the Pig, Rabbit, and Goat, with 2027 being their leaving year. From 2028 to 2030, the Tiger, Horse, and Dog enter their samjae years.
How Does It Apply to My Birth Chart?
Samjae is an old folk tradition calculated solely using your birth year animal. To truly understand your fortune, you must look at your complete birth chart, including your birth month, day, and hour.
Even among people born under the same animal sign, the flow of samjae feels completely different depending on the full chart. Look closely at the energy carried by your complete birth date and time to see your true fortune.
