Their story
Her parents fled south from Hamgyeong province in the North during the Korean War and settled in Abai Village, a refugee village on a sandbar in Sokcho that you still reach by a little hand-pulled ferry. She grew up there and has lived there fifty years. Every New Year, people come to the east coast to watch the first sunrise and drop by her place, and she walks them through the year ahead, month by month.
