Son is a wandering spirit from ancient folklore said to move across the four directions each day and interfere with human affairs. On days when the lunar date ends in 9 or 0 (the 9th, 10th, 19th, 20th, 29th, and 30th), Son is said to ascend to the heavens and be absent from all directions, which is why they are called Son-free days.

There are six days in a lunar month. If a lunar month ends on the 29th, there is no 30th, leaving five days; on the solar calendar, there are about five to seven days each month. In 2026, there are 68 days in total.

Son is believed to stay in only one direction each day, so you only need to avoid moving toward that direction. When the lunar date ends in 1 or 2 it is East, 3 or 4 is South, 5 or 6 is West, and 7 or 8 is North.
