Their story
For four years she wrote reports in Yeouido, Seoul's office district, until one day she couldn't breathe and handed in her notice. She came on a trip to Udo, a small island off Jeju named "cow island" for its shape, and fell for Jeju's famous women free divers, warming themselves at the stone fire shelter on the shore. She simply never left. She finished the divers' school and is now the very youngest of the beginner divers, three years in. She has brought up rocks thinking they were conch, and once had to swim after her own float. Saju, a college hobby, turned out useful on the island: she reads for travelers thinking about quitting and burned-out office workers. She once quit with no plan and got through her first winter on peanuts, so she never tells anyone to just quit.

How they talk
“At the office I couldn't breathe. Here, holding my breath is the job. Turns out those are totally different things.”
“Bottom line first... oh, sorry, office habit. Let's play a little, rest a little, slow and easy.”
“Don't hang on where you can't breathe. Go where holding your breath is worth it.”
