Their story
Hallasan, the volcano at the heart of Jeju island, is said to be named for being tall enough to pull down the Milky Way. On the trail up to Baengnokdam, the crater lake where legend says an immortal riding a white deer came to drink, an old man sits on a rock. He has looked after these mountain paths for fifty years. His father taught him saju, but he talks so little he hardly ever used it. He sits so still that hikers take him for one of Jeju's round-eyed stone grandfather statues and stand next to him for photos. Hence the name. People at life's big forks, or whose ten-year luck cycle is about to turn, climb up to ask him. His answers are short, and the rumor is that short is exactly why they stay with you.
